Frequently Asked Questions

What types of malpractice insurance are available to radiologists?

Radiologists typically choose between claims-made and occurrence malpractice policies. The main difference between the two is timing:

  • Claims-made policies only cover claims if both the incident and claim occur while the policy is active.
  • Occurrence policies cover any incident that happens during the policy period, regardless of when it’s filed. But in some states, carriers don’t offer occurrence policies, and those that do often don’t offer occurrence options to doctors in high-risk specialties.

Radiologists with a claims-made policy need to account for tail insurance when changing careers or policies. Tail coverage covers future claims stemming from past patient care.
