On April 14, 2025, the Vermont Superior Court placed CARE Risk Retention Group, Inc. (“CARE”) into rehabilitation due to the company’s hazardous financial condition. This move has major implications for physicians currently insured by CARE, and time is of the essence.
Why Was CARE RRG Placed in Rehabilitation?
The Court appointed Vermont’s Insurance Commissioner as the Rehabilitator of CARE, with full authority to manage the company’s operations. Effective immediately:
- All claims payments have been paused. This includes legal defense costs, settlements, and return premiums.
- Litigation involving CARE policyholders is paused for 90 days nationwide.
- All CARE policies will terminate no later than 90 days after written notice or once replacement coverage is secured.
CARE’s liabilities currently exceed its assets, and it is unclear if the company can meet its obligations to policyholders.
