Georgia: Medical Malpractice Insurance Requirements for 2020
Georgia state law does not require physicians to carry medical malpractice insurance. However, Georgia’s laws do stipulate that patients have the right to ask their doctor if they carry medical malpractice insurance. The state’s Patient Right to Know Act also requires physicians to disclose to the Georgia Composite Medical Board whether they have malpractice insurance.
Though Georgia does not legally require medical malpractice insurance, most hospitals and medical facilities do require it of their resident physicians. Typical elected insurance minimums are $1,000,000 per occurrence and $3,000,000 per policy year. If your specialty is high-risk, such as it is for surgeons and OB/GYNs, higher coverage amounts are usually preferred.
